Abstract

The results of our ultrasonography program have been very positive, with substantial improvement in patient care, physician efficiency, fellowship training, and revenue. These benefits, plus the fact that renal ultrasonography is straightforward and does not require extensive training or expensive equipment, indicate that ultrasonography should become a standard procedure in the practice of nephrology. The best way to accomplish this is to incorporate ultrasonography into nephrology training programs and establish a formal accreditation procedure. Only a concerted effort will establish ultrasonography as a technique for nephrologists, a change that is long overdue.
