Abstract

Introduction

Most psychosocial attitude studies for donors are not evaluated and are not valid. Validated questionnaires are necessary to compare results and guarantee that they measure what they are intended to measure.

Objective

To analyze the psychometric characteristics of the attitude questionnaire toward the donation of one's own organs after death. We evaluated PCID-DTO RIOS (Questionnaire of “Proyecto Colaborativo Internacional Donante” about organ donation and transplant; donación y trasplante de órganos in Spanish), developed by Dr Ríos, for its validation in a Spanish-speaking population.

Method

A sample of 600 Spaniards over 18 stratified by age and gender according to the center were included. The PCID-DTO-RIOS was used, which allows determination of the factors that condition that attitude. Structured analysis was used in several stages, with an initial description of the data, exploratory factorial analysis, item analysis, and internal factor consistency.

Results

The 20 items of the questionnaire are grouped into 4 factors, which explain 63.203% of the total variance. By factors, this is distributed as follows: factor 1 (6 items) 26.287%; factor 2 (7 items) 24.972%; factor 3 (4 items) 6.834%; and factor 4 (3 items) 5.110%. The analysis of the items and the internal consistency measured through Cronbach α (α1 = .95, α2 = .80, α3 = .74, and α4 = .64) support the four-factor composition, with α = 0.834.

Conclusions

The questionnaire PCID-DTO-RIOS is composed of 4 factors that explain a high percentage of the attitude toward the donation of one's own organs after death.

Population Screened

To carry out this study, a sample of 600 subjects from the eastern area of Spain was selected. Sampling was randomized and stratified by geographical location, age, and sex and included the data of the sampling of the population. The inclusion criteria for obtaining the sample were: (1) age at least 18 years; (2) of Spanish origin; and (3) residing in Spain.

Study Questionnaire and Variables

The PCID-DTO RIOS questionnaire consists of 20 items with closed answers and has been used by the International Donor Collaborative Project

Initial Description of Data

The descriptive statistics of mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis for each of the 20 items are shown in Table 1. The averages are between 2.81 (item 3) and 1.29 (item 15) with values for typical deviations between 1.512 (item 18) and 0.449 (item 3). Most items show negative skewness with values between −2.356 (item 2) and 0.973 (item 12). In addition, the distributions are leptokurtic; the minimum value is observed in item 10 (−1.557) and the maximum value in item 2 (.,864). Before

Discussion

It is necessary to know the psychometric characteristics of the questionnaires used in the different psychosocial studies, especially to know the validity and the reliability of the questionnaire. Although it is not necessary to know these characteristics to validate a questionnaire, the use of a questionnaire (that is to say, the experience obtained from its use) has usually been considered as a validation, provided that the questionnaire has been designed by a group of professionals who are
