These findings support the potential utility of these simple variables when incorporated into SCD risk scores or models.21 SCD occurs in different population groups, but a large subset includes patients without previously known heart disease.24 Interestingly, in our study, 20% of the patients admitted with SCD due to VA had CCI = 0, that is, many of these patients could have been considered “low risk” based on their clinical profile.

Dr. Goldberger is Director of the Path to Improved Risk Stratification, NFP, a not-for-profit think tank on risk stratification for sudden cardiac death which has received the following grant support - 1R13HL132512-01 (2016) and NHLBI 1R13HL123252-01 (2014) - and unrestricted educational grants from Boston Scientific, GE Healthcare, Gilead Sciences, Medtronic, and St Jude Medical.
