These include elevated detection thresholds (Korytowska and Szmeja, 1993; Griep et al., 1997; Landis et al., 2011) and decreased scores on both odor identification (Conrad et al., 1987; Corwin, 1989; Frasnelli et al., 2002; Grapsa et al., 2010) and discrimination (Schiffman et al., 1978; Frasnelli et al., 2002). Taste recognition thresholds have been found to be elevated in a number of renal disease patients, particularly for sweet and sour stimuli (Burge et al., 1978).

However, all prior studies examining odor discrimination and identification found significant differences in odor discrimination and identification by using butanol Sniffin Sticks, isoamyl alcohol sniff bottles, commercial food flavors, and modified versions of the University of Pennsylvania SIT.13,15-18 Greip et al17 was the only group to report an association of impaired olfactory function and nutritional state.
